Over 220 suspects arrested during Ekurhuleni crime clampdown

Among them, 92 arrests were for contact crimes, 10 for contact-related crimes, 36 for other serious crimes and 28 for GBV-related offences.

The police and other law enforcement agencies’ relentless crime-fighting efforts in Ekurhuleni continue to deliver results, arresting 221 people for various offences between July 11 and the morning of July 13.

Of these arrests, 161 resulted from a suspect-tracing operation, Operation Shanela, held across Ekurhuleni policing precincts on July 12.

Among them, 92 arrests were for contact crimes, 10 for contact-related crimes, 36 for other serious crimes and 28 for GBV-related offences.

The SAPS and other law enforcement agencies made more arrests during their weekly safer festive season operations across Ekurhuleni policing precincts throughout the weekend.

Captain Neldah Sekgobela said the Thembisa operations yielded several arrests.

“Successes were strengthened during the main operation in Thembisa, led by acting provincial commissioner Major General Mbuso Khumalo on the evening of July 12,” Sekgobela said.

“Six illegal liquor outlets were closed, three people were arrested for drug possession, 11 undocumented immigrants were detained, and 16 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.”

Additionally, two vehicles were impounded because their engines had been tampered with.

A person was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm after searching him and his vehicle at a roadblock on Reverend RTJ Namane Road in Thembisa.
