Five suspects arrested for harassing motorists, issuing fake fines

The men were stopped when they reportedly forcefully took a vehicle belonging to a metro police officer and he called for back-up.

The EMPD arrested five men for harassment and intimidation at the Mall of Thembisa on August 27.

According to EMPD media liaison officer, Thabiso Makgato, the arrests followed numerous complaints from community members about a group allegedly targeting shoppers who use their personal vehicles at the mall.

“The group’s modus operandi was to issue so-called fines ranging between R3 000 and R6 000 to people found using their personal vehicles,” Makgato explained.

The situation escalated when the suspects reportedly forcefully took a vehicle belonging to a metro police officer.

“The arrest was effected after an incident involving a metro police officer, whose vehicle was forcefully taken from him.

“The officer managed to call for backup and five suspects, aged between 26 and 30, were arrested,” said Makgato.

The suspects were detained at the Thembisa Police Station and face charges of harassment and intimidation.

They are expected to appear in the Thembisa Magistrate’s Court soon.

Makgato said the EMPD will continue monitoring the area to ensure community safety.
