Rabie Ridge SAPS secures life sentences for serial rapist and armed robber

Musa Maicana (27) received three life terms and 300 additional years in the Johannesburg High Court after being convicted of a violent crime spree across Norkem Park, Thembisa and Ivory Park.

Rabie Ridge SAPS has secured a major conviction in a series of violent crimes, with 27-year-old Musa Maicana sentenced to three life terms plus an additional 300 years.

According to SAPS district spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela, the sentencing was handed down on August 28 in the Johannesburg High Court. Maicana was found guilty of multiple counts of rape, armed robbery, kidnapping, pointing a firearm, and possession of dangerous weapons. All sentences will run concurrently.

Sekgobela explained that between 2014 and 2019, Maicana targeted victims in Norkem Park, Thembisa, Thembisa South and Ivory Park.

He lured them to isolated areas such as cemeteries, railway lines, open veld and other remote spaces, where he raped them at gunpoint and robbed them of their cellphones.

The Investigating officer Detective Sergeant Mafufuwe Lesford Mangwale of The Tembisa Family Violence child protection Services and Sexual Offenses Unit.

He was arrested on July 26, 2024, in connection with a Thembisa case dating back to November 2019.

Further investigation linked him to a string of similar crimes across the region, ultimately leading to 42 charges being brought against him in the High Court.

Detective Sergeant Mafufuwe Lesford Mangwale, who spearheaded the investigation, was praised for his dedication to bringing the accused to justice.

Ekurhuleni District Commissioner Major General Anna Sithole applauded Mangwale’s hard work and urged communities to break the silence on gender-based violence and the abuse of women and children.

She also encouraged survivors not to withdraw such cases, stressing the importance of allowing perpetrators to face the full might of the law.
