Police chase ends in shootout and arrests in Cresslawn
Two of the suspects were shot and apprehended, while a third managed to flee despite sustaining gunshot wounds.
A high-speed chase through Cresslawn ended in a shootout between police and armed suspects on Friday morning, October 24.
According to Sergeant Sharon Tsotsotso, spokesperson for the Sebenza SAPS, members were patrolling the area at around 11:30 when they received a complaint about an armed robbery in Beech Street, Cresslawn.
“Officers followed up on information that four unknown males driving a silver Volkswagen Polo were involved in the incident,” said Tsotsotso.
Officers spotted the suspected vehicle in the area and attempted to stop it, but the driver sped off. Officers gave chase as the vehicle headed toward Zuurfontein Road in the direction of Thembisa.

During the pursuit, the suspects allegedly opened fire on the police, who returned fire. The chase came to an end when three suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
“Two of the suspects were shot and apprehended, while a third managed to flee despite sustaining gunshot wounds,” Tsotsotso confirmed.
One suspect was taken to Tembisa Hospital for medical treatment after being shot in the left leg. The other suspect was arrested on the scene.
Police recovered a Glock pistol with a filed-off serial number and 10 rounds of ammunition. The firearm was booked into evidence as per SAPS procedures.
The two arrested suspects, aged 40 and 43, are expected to appear in court soon on charges of armed robbery, attempted murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
No police officers were injured during the incident.
