Security officer shoots armed suspects in Isando

The first suspect was declared dead at the scene while the second suspect was taken to hospital where he remains under police guard.

Early this morning, December 9, Kempton Park police responded to a complaint of a shooting in Isando.

“On arrival, officers met a security officer who reported that he had been approached by two men who asked him for directions,” said SAPS Ekurhuleni North District spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela.

She added that the security officer became suspicious.

“One of the men then produced a firearm and pointed it at him. The security officer immediately drew his company-issued firearm and fired at the suspects.”

One suspect was struck in the upper body and fell to the ground.

“The second suspect was also shot at but managed to flee the scene. He was later located and returned to the scene by members of the Edenvale SAPS,” said Sekgobela.

Paramedics arrived and certified the first suspect dead on the scene. A firearm was found in the possession of the deceased; its serial number had been filed off.

The second suspect, a 30-year-old male, sustained injuries and was taken to hospital, where he is under police guard. The identity of the deceased is unknown at this stage.

A case of attempted murder has been opened.
