Two jailed for robbing Uber driver in Birchleigh, says Norkem Park SAPS
Police have welcomed the sentencing of two suspects after a robbery involving an e-hailing driver led to arrests and the recovery of a stolen cellphone.
Norkem Park SAPS has welcomed the conviction and sentencing of two men involved in a robbery with aggravating circumstances following an incident in Birchleigh.
A case docket was opened after an e-hailing (Uber) driver was robbed by two suspects who had requested a trip.
It is alleged that on arrival, the two male suspects robbed the driver of his cellphone and instructed him to stop the vehicle before fleeing the scene.

“The complainant pursued the suspects and managed to apprehend one of them, who was subsequently handed over to police.
“The second suspect was later arrested, and the stolen cellphone was recovered in his possession,” said Norkem Park SAPS communications officer Sergeant Portia Mkhondo.
She added that through a thorough investigation led by Sergeant Edwin Kgomo, the case was successfully presented before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court, where both accused were found guilty of robbery with aggravating circumstances.
The court sentenced each accused to 15 years’ imprisonment, of which five years have been suspended for a period of five years.

Norkem Park SAPS station commander Colonel Nelly Maunatlala commended Kgomo for his diligent investigative work, and also praised the victim for his courage, as well as the swift response by police members which contributed to the successful arrests and convictions.
Police have urged members of the public and e-hailing drivers to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to their nearest police station.
