On March 31 and April 1, the EMPD’s Overloads Unit carried out a vehicle and driver fitness, as well as pedestrian, operation along the R21 and N12 freeways in the Kempton Park and Benoni areas.

With increased traffic as commuters travelled to other provinces for the long weekend, the operation focused on removing pedestrians from the freeways, whose presence poses a serious risk to motorists.

Officers also assessed vehicle roadworthiness and driver compliance with traffic regulations.

During the operation:

• 32 pedestrians were arrested and later released with warnings at the Kempton Park and Benoni Police Stations.
• Four pedestrians were arrested for contraventions of the Immigration Act and detained at their respective police stations.
• Six vehicles were impounded for various violations, including operating without valid permits and operator cards, and failing to meet roadworthiness standards in terms of the National Road Traffic Act, Act 93 of 1996.

The EMPD said it will continue conducting similar operations throughout the Easter period to promote road safety and protect lives across the City of Ekurhuleni.
