Emergency services on scene after two pedestrians were fatally struck by a truck on the R21 freeway near Thembisa.

Two pedestrians were killed on Friday afternoon after being struck by a truck while attempting to cross the R21 freeway southbound, just before the Highveld Engen One Stop outside Thembisa.

According to the City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), the incident occurred at around 14:14.

On arrival at the scene, rescue teams found that an articulated truck had been involved.

“The two victims, a man and a woman, were found motionless in the emergency lane of the freeway. One of the pedestrians was trapped under the truck while the other was lying on the pavement,” said DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi.

Two off-road lanes were temporarily closed as members of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) carried out investigations.

The City of Ekurhuleni has once again urged members of the public to avoid walking on freeways, reminding residents that it is illegal for pedestrians, cyclists, and smaller motorcycles (200cc and below) to be on a freeway.
