Kempton Park – Van Riebeeck Park murder accused remains behind bars Murder accused Werner Kluge appeared in the Kempton Park Regional Court on July 23, where his case was postponed to July 30 for a formal bail application. According to the state, the postponement was requested to allow the investigating officer additional time to verify the accused’s profile. Kluge was remanded in custody until his next court appearance. During Kluge’s previous court appearance on July 16, his legal representative objected to media coverage, arguing that his client was uncomfortable with photographs of him circulating on social media. The magistrate ruled that the matter was of public interest and found the objection to be insufficient. The court subsequently granted permission for media photographs to be taken. Kluge’s court appearances follow the fatal shooting of a 34-year-old man at a property in Van Riebeeck Park on July 14. According to the SAPS, officers were patrolling the Norkem Park area at about 10:17 when they were alerted to the shooting by an employee at the property. When officers arrived, they found six spent cartridges and blood at the scene. The victim had already been transported by relatives to Arwyp Medical Centre, where he later succumbed to his injuries. “Preliminary investigations indicated that the alleged suspect, who is known to the victim and believed to be a family member, arrived at the property in Van Riebeeck Park and allegedly called the victim outside before opening fire,” said Norkem Park SAPS spokesperson Portia Mkhondo. The victim sustained gunshot wounds to his left arm, near his chest and upper body. Mkhondo confirmed that a murder case was opened and that Kluge was subsequently arrested.
