For years, the residents have complained about the potholes and the lack of road maintenance in Ward 15.

Many roads and stormwater systems were not maintained correctly for the past two decades.

Heavy rain, and lapses in maintenance schedules and rehabilitation projects, only worsened the situation.

According to Ward 15 Clr Amanda Davison, the Roads and Stormwater Department now have a plan to fix the roads.

She said the department received an adjusted budget, and patching contractors had begun to attend to the main routes.

“The department is working on minor roads, as per reported issues, with reference numbers on the city’s incident management system.

“Stormwater systems are a major concern, and sinkholes are forming throughout Birchleigh. There is a multi-year rehabilitation project on the Capex budget.

“Elgin Bridge remains a major concern, especially after the Boksburg disaster. I am communicating with various departments for improved signage and the request to have a ‘low bridge’ warning uploaded to all GPS systems for truck drivers unfamiliar with the area.

“The craters under the Elgin Road bridge were repaired a while ago, and I have requested the roads and stormwater department to improve and clear the stormwater drainage system under the bridge.”

Davison added that another concern for residents in her ward is the traffic control measures, such as speed bumps.

“These must be applied for by the residents,” she said.

“Some of the roads in Ward 15 are poorly serviced.

“Unfortunately, over the previous year, little to no maintenance was done, not just on the roads, but all infrastructure.

“With the help of social media, residents assist me in reporting issues, and I, as a councillor, escalate these to the relevant department.

“All feedback is through service delivery groups and public meetings.

“My ward committee also assists with reporting and giving feedback,” said Davison.

She said the city is working to improve the conditions of many roads, and residents and businesses are requested to report potholes on the My CoE App.
