Thembisa residents speak out on tariff hikes at TCF meeting

At its second meeting of the year, the Tembisa Community Forum gathered locals at Rabasotho open space to raise concerns.

The Tembisa Community Forum held its second meeting of the year at the Rabasotho open space on July 13.

The forum discussed issues affecting the community, with the newly increased tariffs at the top of the agenda.

The Thembisan highlights some comments from the community about their issues. Here’s what they had to say:

Bhekisiza Nkosi: I think residents have been moving on a directionless journey, and it is time to level up and take the fight to them. We are a paying community and demand better. I cannot pay rent and still drive into potholes or live in an area rarely maintained by the people we put in power. To the community of Thembisa, I believe we have talked for a long time; it’s enough. Action is needed to move forward.

Wonder Maseko: We already pay R150 in electricity fees, unaware of which are affecting the communities, not only Thembisa. We need to unite with Kwa-Thema, Duduza and others. Keep in mind that councillors in chambers are a united front. When they make decisions, they make them collectively, affecting everyone here. Engage with other community forums in Ekurhuleni, show unity and work as one because I understand that what you face is what they face as well.

Mandla Malebe: I agree with the points mentioned, but think the best solution is to have a petition as residents, where we will sign in agreement with what we want to change and use it when we submit our memorandum. That will help strengthen our grievances and give us steps to take when we are not answered.
