Water in Ekurhuleni confirmed safe, city denies poisoning reports

The City of Ekurhuleni has denied allegations of water contamination in several townships, confirming that all potable water supplied across the metro meets national safety standards.

The City has reassured residents that the potable water supplied throughout the municipality remains clean, safe and fully compliant with South African National Standard (SANS) 241.

The City, in a media statement, has dismissed recent claims suggesting that water sources in Tsakani, Duduza, Langaville and KwaThema had been poisoned, describing the allegations as false.

According to the statement, there is no contamination in any reservoirs or water tankers servicing these areas.

City officials clarified that the current water supply interruptions affecting parts of Tsakani and Langaville are unrelated to water quality.

The disruptions are instead attributed to low water levels at Rand Water’s Brakpan reservoirs.

The municipality further confirmed that all reservoirs and tanker sites are secured around the clock, with 24-hour security in place, and that no security breaches or incidents have been reported.

To ensure the safety of drinking water, the City conducts rigorous water quality testing on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. These tests consistently confirm that the water supplied to residents is safe for consumption.
