EMPD warns motorists of livestock roaming on public roads
Such animals are not allowed in residential areas.
The EMPD urges motorists to be vigilant for livestock such as cows, sheep, and goats roaming on public roads.
According to EMPD spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, such animals are not allowed in residential areas.
“If anyone knows of a place that is strictly zoned for residential purposes and there is livestock, it should immediately be reported,” she said.
Thepa said that when driving toward livestock, motorists must leave a safe following distance and give the right of way to the animals to pass.
Once at a stop, motorists must put on their hazard/emergency lights to alert those behind them so that they can also slow down.
“Other roads have road signs indicating there are animals that cross that road, so be vigilant for those road signs. When coming across such animals and you feel that you or others are in danger, do not hesitate to call the SPCA or the EMPD,” she said.
Motorists can report livestock on public roads to the EMPD Services Call Centre on 086 054 3000 or the Kempton Park SPCA on 011 975 6537.
