Pre-termination notices dumped in manhole

“There was a whole pack of notices that were just disposed by whoever was supposed to deliver them” - Pomona resident Renus Muller.

Pomona resident Renus Muller found a pack of pre-termination notices dumped in storm drain between Methley Street and Bekker Avenue recently.

Muller said that he arrived home and found the electricity to his house was cut due to a bill issue.

“I never received the termination notice,” said Muller.

He added that he went to Kempton Park Civic Centre and paid the R4 800 required for reconnection after he received a municipal bill of R11 000.

“We were told to travel all across town to find employees from the energy department.”

Muller said aa few days after his disconnection debacle he and his partner were walking their dogs when he saw a stack of pre-termination notices dumped in an open manhole.

“There was a whole pack of notices that was just disposed by whoever was supposed to deliver them.”

He said he didn’t contact the municipality regarding this matter as he believes that the municipality doesn’t pay attention to issues faced by residents.

“Truth be told, even if I did report the matter, I doubt anyone at the municipality would pay attention to this matter,” he concluded.

Spokesperson for the City of Ekurhuleni, Zweli Dlamini, said the issue is noted.

“Unfortunately, in the absence of specific details as to the alleged dumping of notices, the applicable properties and possible contractor could not be identified nor investigated due to limited information given,” said Dlamini.

He added that the city requests that such be forwarded for further investigation and where needed appropriate contractual penalties will be applied and remedial action implemented to prevent any future occurrence.

“The City of Ekurhuleni can confirm that in terms of its internal credit control processes, photo evidence as well as other relevant information is obtained with each credit control action done at the property and where it is found that the service failed, the relevant costs will be reversed on the applicable consumer account and if by the failure of the contractor, penalty clauses in terms of the service contract be applied,” he said.

Dlamini invited residents to contact the local offices should any similar instances be observed.

“Be assured that remedial sanction will be applied to contractor found wanting in such instances.”
