The City of Ekurhuleni Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and other stakeholders including Absa Bank and Home Affairs conducted a youth talk at Rabasotho Hall in Thembisa on June 29.

EMPD media liaison officer Marie Mashishi said that the event was aimed at empowering the youth as well as giving them information about unemployment, drug abuse and skills development.

The CoE emergency services demonstrated a fire drill scenario and presented a talk on fire fighting.

Mashishi said that the CoE’s EMS demonstrated what happened in a shack fire through simulations.

A small alarm detector was installed inside the simulation shack and a fire was started.

“The alarm activated and would have alerted occupants inside the shack to evacuate before the fire became out of control,” she said.

She told The Thembisan that during the demonstration, community members used a bucket brigade system to extinguish the fire.

Mashishi said that as part of the demonstration, while community members fought the fire, the Thembisa Fire Station was alerted and firefighters took over from the community.

“For this demonstration, the cause of the fire was undetermined and arson was not ruled out. The ‘scene’ was then handed over to the SAPS to investigate,” Mashishi.

She said the demonstration helped residents understand what would happen in the case of an actual fire.
