Child Welfare Kempton Park joins hands with companies for Mandela Day

Kempton Park welfare organisation receives much-needed assistance on Mandela Day.

Child Welfare Kempton Park celebrated Mandela Day with various companies including Arwyp Medical Centre, Absa, McDonald’s, Efekto and Wonder on July 18.

Arwyp staff and students celebrated their 67 minutes by painting walls, cleaning the facility and cutting grass.

“We pledged our 67 minutes to reach out to the community of Kempton Park and also add to what millions of South Africans were doing throughout the country,” said Arwyp nursing manager, Potria Magabane.

She added that to the staff, Mandela Day meant humanity and kindness and that it was important for staff to celebrate the day.

According to Magabane, Arwyp staff hoped to have a meaningful impact on the children.

“We need to invest in our future. We wanted to bring hope back to the children,” said Magabane.

Staff members from Absa spent 67 minutes with the staff and children at Child Welfare Kempton Park.

Those attending handed over donations and spent time with children.

From there, staff members paid a visit to the welfare shelter to see how they could further assist the organisation.

“Absa’s slogan is today, tomorrow, together, so our initiative is to give back to the community. We considered welfare as a good place to start,” said Bronson Colan from Absa.

He added that Nelson Mandela said that people can live their lives as they wish, but if they want to make a difference, they must make a significant change to somebody else.

“That’s when everyone can make a difference in the lives of others. If we can give just a little bit back, it will to uplift the entire community,” said Colan.

Taal-Net College learners visited the welfare and spent their time in playing with children and helping in the garden.

Efekto and Wonder visited the welfare’s shelter to donate items needed for the garden including fertilizers, soil conditioners, seeds, tools and overalls.

“We brought together our staff from head office and various warehouses to contribute towards the gardens of the organisation,” said Labious Masike from Eketo and Wonder.

Masike added that staff also shared their knowledge of gardening and gardens with those responsible for the upkeep of the welfare’s gardens.

Kempton Park McDonlads visited the children with burgers and drinks.

“As McDonald’s, we believe in the value of community. By giving back to the community we feel that we have responded well to one of our core values,” McDonlads guest experience manager, Lindy Ndlovu said.

Child Welfare Kempton Park director, Rebecca Moabelo said everyone at the organisation felt blessed.
