Exposed wires in Edleen pose danger to locals
The CoE failed to attend to the exposed wires.
After a vehicle struck a street light pole on Rienert Avenue in Edleen on July 4, the wires were left exposed.
“It was around 11:00 when a car crashed and took out the whole pole. It sounded like an explosion,” resident Bernie Hope said.
Residents said they did not expect the municipality to take so long to attend to the matter because it was urgent.

“This is a danger to the community and affects other street lights.
“This must be fixed because the whole street is dead. This one light affected other lights, so no lights are working,” said Hope.

Hope told the Kempton Express that the municipality was supposed to solve the matter long ago.
Ward Clr Tracey Lourenco said the exposed wires endangered the school children and people who passed by.
She said people could be electrocuted if the wires went live at any time.

Lourenco said her concern was for the many children who walked daily on Rienert Avenue.
“Even an adult who doesn’t know could touch the wires or walk past them, and it will electrocute them.
“When the power goes on, and the street lights are supposed to go on, these wires will go on, too,” she said.
Lourenco tried to report the matter to the energy team, but they took no action.

“I reported this issue as urgent to the energy team on July 5 and did several follow-ups, but still they did nothing,” said Lourenco.
The Express sent an enquiry to the CoE on August 4, requesting comment by August 7. At the time of going to print, no comment was forthcoming.
