Herfsland residents enjoy spring celebration

The residents always look forward to the celebration, particularly "shopping" with family members. Some families travelled from far way to be with a loved one the day.

Herfsland Care Centre was adorned in colours on Saturday as residents celebrated spring day.

At this annual event, the elderly dress up in colourful clothes and hats.

“The fête is our biggest fundraising project and every year we hold it to raise funds to subsidise the monthly costs for residents that cannot afford the fees,” said nursing services manager, Colleen Goosen.

“We have a spring menu launch, which the elderly look forward to after a long winter,” she said.

Goosen said that because they are an NPO, they do not have the same access to government funding as other senior living facilities do.

Herfsland was established in 1985 and is one of two frail care centres in the area that are registered with the Department of Social Development.

Pancakes, potjiekos and rib burgers from Herfsland are perennial favourites.

“The residents always looked forward to the celebration, particularly ‘the shopping’ with family members. Some families travel from far to be with a loved one on the day.”

She said seeing the residents enjoy themselves is always a blessing as it brightens their day.
