Central Gauteng Athletics attracts athletes from abroad

Pheko who is the reigning 5km Road Running National Junior Champion will be part of the South African Team to the World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade Serbia on March 30th.

Central Gauteng Athletics held its second track and field league meeting at Germiston Stadium on February 3.

The meeting attracted athletes from Gauteng’s sister provinces as well as athletes from abroad, including Germany.

In the 5 000m junior men, Zenzile Pheko of Kopano stunned the crowd with his exceptional performance to secure gold in a time of 15:11.26.

International athletes joined the action at the Germiston Stadium on February 3.

Pheko, who is the reigning 5km road running national junior champion, will be part of the South African team participating in the World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, on March 30.

In the post-interview, Pheko highlighted that his goal is to qualify in the 5 000m event for the Olympic Games later this year.

In second position was Kevin Hickley of BHAC in a time of 15:14.60 followed by Mavela Makhubela of Tembisa clocking 16:24.34 to fill the podium.

In the senior men’s 1500m race, Sibusiso Msibi of UJ dominated in a time of 03:53.90.

Taking the second position was his teammate Ntuthuko Ndimande (03:58.47) and settling for the third position, also in the colours of UJ, was Lehlohonolo Lusiti (03:58.47).

The long jump senior men’s event was filled with action. Cheswill Johnson of UJ secured gold by landing a jump of 7.83.

In the 100m senior women’s event, Rebekka Haase of Germany displayed a showstopper sprint performance to finish first in a time of 11.27.

Claiming the second position was Sinethemba Ngema in a time of 12.04 and settling for the third position was Kaylee le Roux of UJ clocking 12.24.

CGA athletes converged at the Germiston Stadium to compete in various competitions.

With only two leagues remaining before the provincial championships, CGA Track and Field Chairperson Maggie Dicks said she looks forward to seeing more athletes competing this season. This will allow the province to field a strong team at the national championships.

She voiced her appreciation for the international athletes competing so that local athletes can push themselves to greater performances.

“Looking forward to seeing you on February 17 at Germiston Stadium,” said Dicks.
