Local organisation to host annual GBV Awards

The GBV Awards were established to shed light on the relentless efforts of those working towards eradicating violence, promoting gender equality, and fostering safer communities.

Tshegofatsa Rona Welfare and Community Organisation announced the launch of the second annual Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Awards.

Through this initiative, they recognise and celebrate individuals, organisations, and initiatives that made outstanding contributions to combating gender-based violence.

This year’s awards ceremony will take place on March 9 at the Theatre of Marcellus at Emperors Palace, Kempton Park. Proceedings will kick off from 17:00.

GBV remains a pervasive and alarming global issue, affecting millions of individuals each year.

The GBV Awards were established to shed light on the relentless efforts of those working towards eradicating violence, promoting gender equality, and fostering safer communities.

Recipients will be honoured in various categories, including, best male GBV activist, best female GBV activist, best police officer dealing with GBV, best GBV organisation, best GBV ambassador, community builder of the year, best pastor supporting GBV and best community journalist.

These awards will recognise an individual or organisation that has significantly impacted local communities by raising awareness and implementing programs to address GBV, acknowledging and recognising outstanding journalism, storytelling, or media campaigns that have brought attention to GBV and influence positive change to honour religious leaders and police service members who demonstrated exceptional dedication and commitment to advocating for victims and survivors of gender-based violence.

A panel of judges comprising experts and activists working in GBV prevention and support will select the winners.
Giving their voices to the cause, guest artists Andile Thabethe, Puleng March, Idols finalist Lungisa Xhamela, Mmatema and Williams Sejake will perform at the event.

“Tshegofatsa Rona Welfare and Community Organisation remains committed to creating a world free from gender-based violence and hopes that the GBV Awards will inspire and motivate individuals and organisations to join the collective effort in addressing this critical issue,” said executive director, Cynthia Dinalane.
