Local flying squad recovers copper valued at R 60 000 and busts suspects

Two foreign nationals were arrested after officers found copper worth six thousand rand in their truck.

Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) members arrested two suspects and recovered copper worth approximately R60 000 on February 19.

At around 07:30 officers were travelling on the R23 in Kempton Park when they pulled over a Toyota truck.
The occupants were two foreign nationals who seemed nervous.

On inspection, officers discovered four bags of copper cables worth approximately R60 000 hidden underneath scrap tin cans in the truck.

The Toyota truck that the suspects were travelling in when they were pulled over by officers.

The suspects could not explain the copper and were immediately arrested.

The driver of the truck then handed one of the arresting officers R10 000 in cash for their release, which further added a charge of bribery to his arrest.

BFS commander, Lieutenant Colonel Tali Lukhele, commended the officers for their work and for showing criminals that bribery will not be tolerated.

The suspects will appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court facing charges of possession of suspected stolen property and bribery.
