Geology students enjoy an interesting day out at Melville Koppies

Wits first-year geology students tramped the Melville Koppies on February 24 from 08:00 until 13:00.
Jenny Grice, a Melville Koppies volunteer, said their task was to visit seven sites scattered across the Koppies, each manned by a geology lecturer.
“They learnt about the various fields in geology and the equipment available to help them unearth the rocks’ secrets.

“They each got to examine the grains of the almost 3b-year-old rocks to try and deduce how they were formed,” said Grice.
She said Melville Koppies is not only suitable for university students.
“It’s a vast show-and-tell playground where our trained guides can expose learners to history, geography, life sciences, tourism, environmental management and much more. All this for just R50 entrance per student.”
