Resident frustrated over potholes in Kempton Park

Community members feel their cries for help are falling on deaf ears. Many believe the road infrastructure in the area is falling apart.

For countless motorists and residents, potholes are the norm on Kempton Park roads.

Community members feel their cries for help are falling on deaf ears. Many believe the road infrastructure in the area is falling apart.

Liz van Dyk, a resident of Tanager Estate located on Dann Road in Glen Marais, is one such resident and said she is at her wits’ end.

“These potholes are a nightmare. The road is narrow and busy. It is difficult for motorists to avoid hitting the potholes. They end up driving on the side of the road,” she said.

Van Dyk added the road becomes more dangerous when it rains and potholes are filled with water.

“It becomes hard for motorists to spot and avoid them. As residents, we have tried to fill the potholes with bricks. Some have even poured cement in the potholes, but that does not last long. Proper resurfacing needs to be done.”

Van Dyk added another concern for her and other residents was the lack of maintenance of the field opposite her estate.

“The grass has not been cut in ages.”

She said motorists fear for their safety because they are concerned that hijackers could hide in the long grass.

Van Dyk added they notified their ward councillor Jaco Terblanche about these problems.

“Terblanche conducted a visit. When we asked if there was anything to be done to fix the road, he said the municipality has no money,” she said.

The Kempton Express caught up with Terblanche to discuss the concerns of the residents.

“Residents did report the potholes to me. I reported the potholes to the City of Ekurhuleni’s Roads and Storm Water Department.

“The feedback that I received from the department was they were busy repairing the main routes first due to a shortage of resources,” he said.

Terblanche added a request was sent to the department to attend to and urgently repair the potholes.

“I follow up with the complaint regularly. I have also requested that the department place the road on the resurfacing list urgently due to the condition of the road,” he said.

The Kempton Express sent an enquiry for comment to the CoE on March 1, requesting comment before midday on March 4.

At the time of publication no comment was received.
