Melville Koppies call families and friends for a hike on August 25

No need to worry if you can’t make the 8km. When you break at about 3km, you can choose to split from the group and find a short way back to the start.

Friends and families can join an 8km group guided hike at the Melville Koppies on August 25.

The hike will start at the Melville Koppies nature reserve/heritage site and go straight up the Koppie and through the locked gate into Melville Koppies East, which is open daily.

Experience the stark grassland of the south-facing slopes of the Melville Koppies East with a direct view of Joburg’s CBD.

Do not worry if you can’t make the 8km. When you break at about 3km, you can choose to split from the group and find a short way back to the start, and it’s safe to walk back on your own.

Book a guided tour to find out what animal makes these pebble-covered mounds on the Koppies.

If 8km sounds too daunting, you can try the self-guided options, including a 5km trail or a 3km heritage trail.

The Melville Koppies is open every Sunday from 08:00 to 11:30. Entrance costs R90 for adults and R50 for persons under 18.

Safe parking is available opposite the entry to the Melville Koppies at Marks Park Sports Club on Judith Road, Emmarentia.
