Nimrod Park Residents Association holds market day to raise funds

Local residents association held a market as a fundraiser for their crime fighting project.

The Nimrod Park Residents Association held its first community market, aimed at raising funds for a neighbourhood security project, on October 27.

The market featured a variety of stalls, offering items like handmade handbags, toys, biscuits, and hot dogs, attracting community members throughout the day.

Chairperson of the association, Vleis van Zyl, along with committee members Kobus Prinsloo and Lazarus Naidoo, spoke to Kempton Express about the initiative.

Renita Mapepa makes handbags. She has been doing this since 2010 and she says it takes her day to make about three or four handbags. She encourages people who are talented with handwork to start making money with their talent.

“We are working to secure funding for our security project to make our community safer for all residents,” said Van Zyl.

“Our goal is to transform our area into a crime-free zone.”

Prinsloo noted that while crime had previously affected the area, the rate had dropped significantly since the neighbourhood was enclosed.

He added that there were still certain areas requiring further security measures to improve safety.

Nombulelo Ndumndum and Tilly Makgatho have been running their beading business for two years.

Naidoo expressed that the event was a success, especially considering it was their first attempt.

“It’s been a valuable learning experience for us. We’re grateful to all the residents who came out to support, and we’re looking forward to hosting more markets in the future,” he said.

Van Zyl added that the association plans to hold another market early next year, around March, to take advantage of the warmer weather.
