Thembisa artist falls victims to food poisoning

Smezi fell victim to food poisoning after eating biscuits from a local shop.

Food poisoning, which has claimed the lives of at least 23 children nationwide after they ate snacks bought from spaza shops, continues to raise alarm across SA.

The latest victim is Thembisa’s beloved Afro-pop artist, Smezi, real name Steven Zulu Shongwe.

Smezi was admitted to Thembisa Hospital after experiencing food poisoning symptoms.

It is believed that, on November 11, he bought a packet of biscuits from a Somalian-owned spaza shop.

After returning home, he ate the biscuits but later felt unwell, experiencing severe stomach pains and weakness.

His partner, Smezi Kazi, quickly arranged an Uber and rushed him to the hospital.

“He is improving but still feels a little dizzy. We hope he makes a full recovery because many depend on him.”

The case is another reminder of the ongoing food safety crisis which has affected countless South Africans, particularly children who bought snacks from informal vendors.

Authorities continue to investigate the source of the contaminated products.
