Operation Basadi aims to eradicate crime in Sebenza

The operation involved a coordinated effort between Sebenza SAPS senior management, EMPD and other units.

Colonel Matshidiso Mbele, station commander of the Boksburg Police Station, led a multidisciplinary Operation Basadi on November 21, representing Ekurhuleni District Commissioner Major General Anna Sithole.The operation was in the Sebenza policing precinct, targeting crime hotspots in the area.

Mbele explained they chose Sebenza because of a high incidence of priority and trio crimes, with 17 cases reported in the last quarter.

“We are here to assist the acting station commander in the fight against crime,” said Mbele.

The operation involved a coordinated effort between Sebenza SAPS senior management, EMPD, the Johannesburg Tactical Response Team (TRT), the Siyabangena Community in Blue (CPF), private security companies, and the Home Affairs Immigration Unit.

The operation, which ran from November 20 until the early hours of November 22, yielded 246 arrests, including:
• 135 suspects for contact crimes such as assault GBH and aggravated robbery.• 20 suspects for contact-related crimes.
• 31 suspects for other serious crimes.
• 34 arrests related to gender-based violence.
• The team arrested 27 illegal immigrants, primarily at a roadblock on Zuurfontein Road.
• Five spaza shops shut down for non-compliance.
• 32 traffic fines issued to the value of R13 100.

The Sebenza SAPS’ Social Crime Prevention team also visited Esther Park Shopping Complex and the Flamingo Mall in Modderfontein.

The Home Affairs Immigration Unit joined the specialised teams.

They engaged with shoppers to share safety tips and raise awareness about crimes commonly affecting malls and ATMs, especially during the festive season.

Sithole commended the collaborative efforts of the SAPS, law enforcement agencies, and community partners in the fight against crime.

The Home Affairs Immigration Unit joined the specialised teams.

“I appreciate the contributions of the SAPS and our partners. Their work helps to decrease violent crimes and ensure the safety of citizens across the district,” said Sithole.

Operation Basadi is part of ongoing efforts to curb crime and promote safety throughout the Ekurhuleni District.
