Councillor Tracey Lourenco reflects on challenges faced in 2024

Crime remains another significant issue across the ward, with illegal tuck shops and businesses a constant challenge.

Ward 104 Clr Tracey Lourenco described 2024 as one of the most challenging years regarding service delivery, with residents feeling let down by various departments throughout the year.

“The year has passed in the blink of an eye, but it has been incredibly frustrating because of the poor level of service delivery. It’s been a rollercoaster ride for the residents and myself,” Lourenco said.

She highlighted the bus rapid transit project on CR Swart Drive as a serious concern.

Despite Mayor Xhakaza’s officially opening the road months ago, it remains incomplete, with unresolved issues like unfinished road markings and final touches.

“The road design is dangerous, and there have been many accidents. The residents are not happy,” she added.

Lourenco also discussed the ongoing pollution at the Swartspruit River, a serious concern for some time.

She said she was relieved that her motion to address this issue was passed in the November council meeting, offering hope for a solution that would benefit the affected residents.

Crime remains another significant issue across the ward, with illegal tuck shops and businesses a constant challenge. While many were closed, others still operate despite being officially closed.

“There are also ongoing problems with the sewer lines in Birch Acres, which will require future infrastructure upgrades,” Lourenco noted.

She said residents in the ward have contended with recurring issues like potholes, streetlights and burst water mains.

The relevant departments have confirmed they are working according to the integrated management system, and residents are encouraged to report incidents via the app or call centre for quicker resolutions.

Another concern for residents is the interim billing, which has caused many unpleasant surprises. Lourenco encourages them to monitor their bills to prevent any unexpected charges.

The growing number of vagrants is another significant problem. Lourenco said she had contacted the province for help to find a solution that provides a safe space for those in need.

“Moving forward, I will continue to raise the challenges we face in the ward. My focus will remain on service delivery, ensuring we achieve the level of service our residents deserve,” she said.

On a positive note, Lourenco said departments had started repairing potholes and streetlights, and refuse collection had run smoothly.

She also praised the parks department for doing what it could with limited resources.

“I thank those departments that did their best this past year and extend gratitude to all the residents for their continued support,” Lourenco said.

“Many amazing people in this community have kept their spirits up despite the challenges. I wish all the residents a blessed, peaceful and safe festive season. If you are travelling, please do so safely.”
