Octilia Green and her young daughter were stranded on Samora Machel Drive in Mbombela after their car broke down.
The rain poured down, adding to their distress, but a good Samaritan appeared. Thea McDonald, a Pilate instructor from White River, stopped to help, diagnosing and fixing the problem before ensuring they reached safety.
This chance encounter highlights the importance of community support and kindness on the roads, particularly for women who are often more vulnerable to crime and harassment.
As the 16 Days of Activism approach, the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA) is emphasizing the need for women to take extra precautions to ensure their safety while driving.
National director of MIWA Pieter Niemand said women are generally more vulnerable on South African roads, and it was crucial that they take extra precautions to ensure their safety.
“Thea’s actions demonstrate the impact that kindness and community support can have on someone’s life. We encourage all women to stay informed, travel safely, and lend a helping hand where possible.”
MIWA has compiled a list of essential safety tips for women drivers, including:
• Considering safety features when buying a vehicle, such as airbags and ABS
• Being aware of surroundings and choosing familiar routes, especially at night
• Keeping emergency contacts saved and carrying essential safety items, such as jumper cables and a first-aid kit
• Knowing how to perform basic maintenance, such as changing a tire
• Being cautious when approaching strangers or accepting help from unknown individuals.
