The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) DEMS aquatic, rescue, firefighting, and disaster management teams remain on high alert following heavy downpours in the region.

This comes as high traffic volumes are expected on the roads with holidaymakers returning to their economic activities within the city.

“Low-lying areas, bridges, open water streams, rivers, and dams may experience flooding, posing risks to structures built in flood-prone zones,” Ntladi said.

Motorists and pedestrians are urged to exercise caution on the roads during these adverse weather conditions to prevent loss of life due to drownings and vehicle accidents.

During this kind of weather, residents are advised to:

• Avoid crossing flooded bridges if the road surface is covered by floodwater.
• Use alternative routes instead of low-lying bridges and roads.
• Refrain from crossing swollen water streams and rivers.
• Avoid driving on bridges or roads in low-lying areas, especially those vulnerable to flooding.
• Seek higher ground if rising water levels are observed.
• Maintain a safe following distance while driving.
• Ensure vehicles are roadworthy and suitable for different weather conditions.

By adhering to these guidelines, residents can contribute to ensuring their safety during severe weather events.
