DEMS provides safety awareness campaign for summer

The City of Ekurhuleni remains committed to fostering a culture of safety and resilience.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) is actively continuing its Summer Safety Awareness Campaign.

This initiative is aimed at keeping residents alert and prepared for the variety of weather conditions experienced during the summer season.

The campaign’s rollout took place between 08:00 and 14:00 on January 11, reinforcing the city’s commitment to preserving lives and protecting property.

As part of its ongoing efforts, the CoE prioritises safety, emphasising that even a single life lost is one too many.

DEMS spokesperson, William Ntladi, said: “The campaign highlights the need for preparedness in the face of adverse weather conditions, including severe thunderstorms, heavy downpours, hailstorms, heatwaves, droughts, and sinkholes.”

Empowering residents with safety knowledge
DEMS personnel engaged directly with community members, sharing vital safety tips through one-on-one interactions and distributing informative pamphlets.

These efforts aim to educate residents on how to stay safe during extreme weather events and how to activate municipal resources for swift assistance in emergencies.

Emergency preparedness: Key steps for residents
Residents are urged to activate the city’s emergency response resources by dialing the life-threatening emergency call number, (011) 458 0911, for immediate assistance.

This hotline connects individuals to emergency services, disaster management, and law enforcement units (EMPD).

To ensure an efficient and effective response, residents should follow this systematic activation procedure:
• State your name and personal contact details.
• Clearly explain why you need help.
• Provide the exact address of the emergency incident
• Mention any landmarks and the nearest crossroads to help responders locate you.
• Ask for the call centre operator’s name.
• Do not hang up until instructed to do so.

Through this ongoing campaign, DEMS ensures that residents are equipped with the knowledge and resources necessary to navigate the challenges of the summer season.

For further information or assistance, residents are encouraged to reach out to municipal resources.
