GDE invests R207m to solve learner placement crisis

The province has consistently faced a significant influx of learners, particularly in grades one and eight, leading to difficulties in placing all students in schools on time.

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has taken a decisive step towards addressing the province’s perennial challenge of accommodating all school learners.

With an R207m allocation to establish mobile units as satellite schools for the 2025 intake, the GDE is showcasing innovative leadership in its commitment to ensuring access to quality education for every child.

For the 2025 academic year, the department has already received over 300 000 applications for these grades, highlighting the urgent need for additional infrastructure.

The introduction of satellite schools through mobile units will alleviate the pressure on existing schools and help reduce the number of unplaced learners.

This approach also aligns with the constitutional mandate to provide every child with the right to education.
Applause for visionary leadership

Education activist Hendrick Makaneta commended Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane and his team for their forward-thinking measures:

“This bold investment by the GDE demonstrates a deep commitment to solving the challenges faced by our education system,” said Makaneta.

“The establishment of mobile units will not only address overcrowding but also ensure that no child is left behind.

“It is heartening to see leadership that prioritises education as a fundamental right and a cornerstone of our future.”

The satellite schools, created through this investment, will directly tackle issues such as overcrowded classrooms and limited resources in urban and semi-urban areas.

MEC Matome Chiloane emphasised the importance of the initiative stating that their priority is to ensure that every learner has access to quality education.

“This investment in satellite schools will significantly enhance our capacity to accommodate learners and uphold their constitutional right to education.”
