Illegal land use in Norkem Park sparks concerns
It is alleged that the church's activities are spiralling out of control with congregants lighting fires and contaminate the Pongola River.
The Kempton Express recently received a complaint from a Norkem Park resident about a church that has allegedly been illegally occupying municipal land since 2021.
The resident alleged that the church’s activities are spiralling out of control, claiming that congregants light fires and contaminate the Pongola River.
Ward councillor Desmond McKenzie expressed his concern about the increasing problem of illegal churches occupying open spaces in the community.

“These churches are not only encroaching on public areas but are now extending onto Pongola River Drive and even into the nearby cemetery,” said McKenzie.
He noted that this unchecked expansion is not only an eyesore but also raises concerns about noise pollution and the safety of the community.
Furthermore, it undermines the rule of law and sets a troubling precedent for future development.
McKenzie called on the EMPD to take stronger action in enforcing by-laws and regulations regarding land use and occupation.

“It is essential that we protect our public spaces and ensure that any development or activity is conducted in a lawful and orderly manner.
“These illegal churches continue to occupy these areas without facing any repercussions from EMPD’s enforcement of by-laws,” he said.
He also urged the City of Ekurhuleni to devise a resolution that benefits the community while addressing the issue.
The Kempton Express sent an inquiry to the City of Ekurhuleni on January 17, requesting a response by midday on January 20.
At the time of going to print, no comment was received.
