Speed limit and penalties explained after EMPD busts taxi driver

Officers said they counted this taxi driver overtaking seven vehicles at once, which was very alarming to them, and they gave chase.

It is unclear if the suspect was trying to get away or was unaware that the officers were chasing him; he did not stop.

The officers managed to stop the suspect before he got on the busy Kaunda Road that connects Zonkiziwe and Katlehong South. They arrested the driver on the spot.

Speed limit violation penalty:

Exceeding the speed limit carries with it fines, depending on how fast a person is driving.

Exceeding the speed limit by between 11 km/h and 15 km/h carries a fine of R250, between 16 km/h and 20 km/h is R500, between 21 km/h and 25 km/h is R 750, between 26 km/h and 30 km/h is R1 000, between 31 km/h and 35 km/h is R1 250 and between 36 km/h 40 km/h is R1 500.

If someone exceeds the speed limit above 40 km/h, the offender must appear in court, where a presiding officer must hand out the appropriate traffic violation penalties.
