Police clamp down on lawlessness during operations

The weekend operation saw the arrest of 225 people.

Ekurhuleni district commissioner, Major General Anna Sithole, commended SAPS members and other law enforcement agencies for their continued efforts to combat crime.

This follows the arrest of more than 225 people for various offences and the closure of five illegal shebeens during the Safer Festive Season Operation Shanela conducted from January 17 to the morning of January 19 across policing precincts in Ekurhuleni.

As part of these operations, detectives arrested 131 people, while tracing wanted individuals across the district on January 18.

Among those apprehended, 63 of the arrests were for contact crimes, 12 for contact-related crimes, 13 for property crimes, 32 for other serious offences and 15 for GBV. Additionally, five illegal shebeens in the Vosloorus area were closed.

In Thembisa, Crime Intelligence members received a tip-off about a person dealing drugs, mainly crystal meth and double-star Mandrax tablets.

The information was shared with the SAPS Thembisa Crime Intelligence and Gauteng Traffic Wardens, leading to an operation that resulted in the arrest of a 21-year-old found with 34 packets of crystal meth and 10 Mandrax.

Sithole thanked the public for providing accurate information that led to successful arrests and applauded the officers for their dedication to tackling crime.
