I am Nonhlanhla Maphangula, a community-driven leader passionate about youth empowerment, education and social development.

Thembisa has been my home for the past 40 years and is where my leadership and service journey began.

From my early days of student leadership to being recognised by various media outlets for my contributions, Thembisa has always been the foundation that shaped my values and passion for making a difference.

Looking back, one of my favourite memories is the sense of unity that Thembisa exuded, especially during community-driven events.

I remember the excitement around local soccer tournaments, cultural celebrations and youth programmes that would bring people together in a way only Thembisa could.

The air was always filled with a feeling of shared purpose, where everyone felt like they belonged. There was something truly special about seeing the entire community come together to support one another.

What I love most about Thembisa is the resilience and generosity of the people.

Thembisa is a place where people don’t hesitate to lend a helping hand, no matter the circumstances.

The spirit of perseverance is strong here, and despite our many challenges, there is an undeniable innovation and will to push forward.

This community doesn’t back down; it rises.

As for my go-to spot in Thembisa, one place I always enjoy is DJ Shimza’s Hangawt. The food is incredible and the atmosphere always allows me to relax and reconnect with the community.

But for moments of reflection, I head to a park in Temong Section. It’s my peaceful place where I can think, plan new projects and gather inspiration for the work I’m passionate about.

There was a moment in Thembisa which completely changed my perspective on community service. It was my first time leading a community outreach programme, and I witnessed first-hand how something so simple could transform lives.

This powerful reminder that real change starts at the grassroots level ignited my passion for leadership and philanthropy.

Thembisa taught me that change doesn’t need to come from the top down; it can start from within the community.

However, youth unemployment and access to opportunities remain significant challenges that need addressing.

I believe mentorship programmes, entrepreneurship hubs, and skills development initiatives can make a huge difference.

If we invest in the youth, we are investing in Thembisa’s future, one where young people can find their paths to success.

What inspires me the most in Thembisa are the everyday heroes – the teachers, entrepreneurs and community leaders who work tirelessly to make life better for others.

They might not always get the recognition they deserve, but their dedication reminds me of why I do what I do. It’s their passion for creating a better future that keeps me going.

If I were to describe Thembisa in three words, they would be ‘resilient’, ‘vibrant’, and ‘united’. These words capture the essence of our community.

We are a place that faces challenges but always bounces back stronger, a place full of life and energy, and most importantly, a place where everyone stands together.

Many people know me as a leader, but few know I’m also a writer and storyteller. I’ve always had a passion for writing, and I use this talent to inspire and advocate for change.

Whether through articles, speeches or personal stories, I believe in the power of words to move people and make a difference.

If I could bring one positive change to Thembisa, it would be establishing youth-driven leadership academies.

These academies would equip young people with the skills, confidence and knowledge they need to take charge of their futures.

By nurturing the next generation of leaders, we ensure that Thembisa remains a thriving, empowered community for years.

The best advice I’ve ever received came from one of my mentors: “Your purpose is bigger than you. Use your platform to serve.”

These words have been my guiding light, reminding me that leadership is not about personal gain but making a lasting impact on the lives of others.

To me, home is a place of belonging, growth and inspiration. It’s where I’ve learnt the values of leadership, resilience and giving back.

Thembisa is much more than just the place I live. It’s the place that shaped who I am today. It will always be my foundation and where I will continue to grow, serve and make a difference.
