Thembisa Drug Rehabilitation Centre gives recovering addicts a new lease on life

Thato Matome hopes to continue his mission to make a difference in the lives of others.

For years, the Thembisa Drug Rehabilitation Centre has played a crucial role in helping drug addicts get off the streets and giving them a second chance at life.

With the new year underway, the centre has already welcomed a new group of individuals determined to turn their lives around and commit to sobriety.

What makes this year particularly remarkable is the growing support from parents, who are now attending sessions alongside their children.

Their presence shows a willingness to support their loved ones through the challenges of recovery, helping them reintegrate into society as dignified and responsible members of the community.

While a new group of individuals is heading to rehab this month, those who have already completed their rehabilitation remain confident and committed to staying clean, thanks to the continued support of the centre.

Founder Thato Matome shared his vision for the year ahead, which includes not only fighting drug abuse but also helping recovering addicts find employment opportunities.

“2024 was a great success, as many of our brothers dedicated themselves to sobriety through our sessions and personal commitment. Today, we have companies willing to hire some of them, which is incredible.

“However, I also need to train them on financial management. It is important for them to find purpose, but they must also learn how to manage their money wisely. We want to prevent relapses caused by financial mismanagement when they start earning again.

“That being said, we are grateful to the companies that are giving them an opportunity, it shows that our efforts are making a difference,” Matome said.

Despite the progress, challenges remain. Matome highlighted the lack of sponsorship as a major hurdle but remains committed to pushing forward.

“As you can see, we had a delayed start this year because I had to wait for my salary to buy enough food for those attending the sessions. However, the work must continue.

“As of this week, we have 10 people set to enter rehab, and I will be travelling to the facility to inspect it, as we will be moving to a new location,” he added.

To accommodate the increasing number of people seeking help, the centre has moved from the Matome family home to a nearby church.

This transition ensures that everyone has the space and support they need as more individuals join the programme each week.

The Thembisa Drug Rehabilitation Centre continues to be a beacon of hope for those battling addiction, offering them not just recovery but also a path to a brighter future.
