“This is a disaster” -12 dead and 45 injured in R21 bus crash

MMC Andile Mngwevu has said that "the city will leave no stone unturned to get to the bottom of the cause of the crash."

City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini has said that this morning’s fatal bus crash claimed the lives of 12 on board and left another 45 injured.

“The injured were taken to the O.R. Tambo, Thembisa and Edenvale hospitals,” he said.

“We are lost for words. This is a disaster. Our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, and our prayers for a speedy recovery to those who have been taken to various hospitals around the area,” said MMC for Roads and Transport Planning in Ekurhuleni Councillor Andile Mngwevu who was at the scene.

“To see so many bodies lying around is quite saddening, and the city feels for the families who would have expected to see their loved ones return home later today.

“Our hearts are extremely heavy right now.”

The MMC has vowed that the city will leave no stone unturned to get to the bottom of the cause of the crash.

At the time the statement was issued, police investigators and other stakeholders were combing the scene for various pieces of evidence that may shed some light as to what transpired.

Initial investigations have not revealed if there were other vehicles involved in the accident.

Motorists travelling on the R21 northbound are advised to use alternative routes following a fatal bus crash earlier this morning, March 11. Multiple fatalities have been reported.

The affected section of the highway has been closed to allow emergency services to conduct rescue and clean-up operations.

Suggested alternative route:

  • Exit the R21 northbound at Griffiths Road.
  • Take Jet Park Road towards Pretoria Road.
  • Follow Pretoria Road towards Kempton Park.
  • Continue on Albatross Street to Voortrekker Road, where the R21 can be rejoined.

Road users are urged to exercise caution and patience.
