Organisations unite in prayer for social ills in Thembisa
Social issues such as gender-based violence (GBV), mental health struggles, unemployment, violence, and crime are rapidly increasing, particularly within households.

Ekurhuleni North faith-based organisations came together under one roof on March 17 at the Shining Light Centre in Ntshonalanga Section, Thembisa, to pray against social ills and observe Passover.
Social issues such as gender-based violence (GBV), mental health struggles, unemployment, violence, and crime are rapidly increasing, particularly within households.
These factors contribute to a growing crisis that many communities, including Thembisa, have come to accept as the norm.

Recognising this, faith-based organisations decided to take a stand, uniting with key stakeholders to address and pray for an end to these challenges.
Constable Kate Selepe of Thembisa South SAPS urged the community to collaborate with law enforcement in the fight against social ills.
“We cannot protect our community alone. That is why we work closely with various organisations to combat GBV.
“It is up to us as parents and residents to take a stand. We cannot leave everything to the police while our community deteriorates.
“We need to unite, community members, organisations, and law enforcement, to fight this stigma and make our area a safer place to live.”
Ayanda Thipe from People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA) reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to assisting the community.
“We have several branches within the area and are always ready to help. While our primary focus is supporting women affected by GBV, we do not exclude men.
“Our goal is to stand against violence. We encourage victims of abuse to reach out before it is too late.

“We provide shelter for up to three months, offering protection and engaging survivors in various activities to aid their recovery.”
Event coordinator Bishop Michael Mtshali highlighted the significance of prayer in guiding those working to uplift their community.
“As faith-based organisations, we have a responsibility to safeguard our area. As we approach Easter, social ills continue to pose a serious threat to our way of life.
“That is why we gathered to pray for our organisations and law enforcement, seeking protection and strength to continue our work.”

The service was well received by community members and churchgoers who attended in large numbers.
The prayer session focused on addressing social issues that hinder community growth.
Attendees were uplifted by the sense of unity displayed by the faith-based organisations.
Witnessing the elderly take a stand against the rise of social ills in Thembisa was a powerful reminder of the community’s determination to create positive change.
The gathering concluded with a candlelight session, symbolising hope and a shared commitment to tackling the challenges facing Thembisa.
