Thembisa is my heartbeat – Bongumusa Kunene
"I am a simple, outgoing extrovert who enjoys connecting with people and embracing the community around me."
My name is Bongumusa Kunene, and I grew up in Thembisa. It’s the only place I’ve ever called home.
I am a simple, outgoing extrovert who enjoys connecting with people and embracing the community around me.
Growing up in Thembisa was one of the best things to happen to me. The spirit of resilience and togetherness here shaped who I am today.

What I love most about Thembisa is its cultural diversity and how people from all walks of life come together.
You get to engage with others from different backgrounds, and it broadens your perspective.
Thembisa is also full of fun places to explore; you’re never short of something to do or somewhere to go.
While I don’t have a favourite spot, I enjoy checking out the many hangouts around the township.
One moment that changed my life was meeting people who had overcome serious challenges and transformed their lives. Their stories inspired me to believe I could make positive changes, too.
But we face serious challenges here. Unemployment is one of the biggest, and it often leads to crime. We’d see a major difference if we created more job opportunities and skills development programmes.

The youth especially need chances to prove themselves.
I find inspiration in DJ Sbu, who came from a township just like this and built something powerful. His success shows that greatness can come from right here in Thembisa.
If I had to describe Thembisa, I’d say it’s hot, vibrant and full of life. The energy here is unmatched.
A lot of people don’t know I can sing. I’m also passionate about helping the youth and being part of the change I want to see.
If given the chance, I’d work on creating more opportunities and support systems for young people. We have so much talent; we just need to nurture it.
The best advice I’ve ever received came from my brother: “Risk it to get a biscuit.”
It might sound simple, but it’s a powerful reminder that success sometimes comes to those willing to take a chance.
To me, home means refuge, love, and peace. And for me, Thembisa will always be home.
