Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to safety, highlighting a recent partnership between the UJ and the Gauteng Department of Community Safety to improve campus and community security through joint initiatives.

The Gauteng Department of Education and the University of Johannesburg (UJ) have strongly condemned the fatal stabbing of 18-year-old Simphiwe ‘Mcebo’ Biyela, a Grade 11 learner, on May 6.

The incident allegedly involved UJ students.

In a statement, Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane expressed heartfelt condolences to Biyela’s family, friends, and school community.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our department remains committed to supporting the school and ensuring the safety and well-being of all learners and staff,” said Chiloane.

Chioane urged the public to allow law enforcement to handle the case and not disrupt schooling further.

He also confirmed that trauma counselling is being provided to students and staff at Musi High School through the department’s psycho-social support team.

Meanwhile UJ management also released a statement condemning the violence.

“UJ strongly condemns any acts of violence or intimidation. Such behaviour goes against our values of respect, dignity, and integrity. If any of our students are found guilty, we will take immediate and firm action,” the university said.

The university emphasised its commitment to positive community relations and safety and said the institution has been working with the local community and authorities to build trust and mutual understanding.

“In partnership with the Gauteng Department of Community Safety, UJ recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding to improve campus and community safety.

Key initiatives include integrating UJ’s security systems with the Provincial Integrated Community Centre and launching joint awareness campaigns focused on gender-based violence, human trafficking, and substance abuse.

“These efforts aim to create safer environments for students, staff, and the broader Gauteng community,” the statement concluded.
