From prison to purpose: Delisa Bembe launches “bouncing back” to inspire youth
Thembisa-born author Delisa Bembe drew a large crowd at the launch of his new book Bouncing Back, a powerful memoir tracing his journey from crime to redemption. Once lured by fast money and street life, Bembe now uses his story to guide young people away from crime and toward opportunity.
Thembisa-born Delisa Bembe, a former convict turned motivational writer, launched his latest book, Bouncing Back, on April 30, drawing a large crowd eager to hear his story of redemption and transformation.
Using his experience with crime and prison, Bembe hopes to inspire young people to choose a better path in life.
Bembe, raised on the streets of Khalambaso, openly shared the hardships he faced growing up in an environment that often glamorised crime.

“Back then, we didn’t have the entertainment or opportunities the youth have today. Our role models were people who made money through crime, including my brother. Even though the police were always at our doorstep, I still admire that lifestyle,” Bembe said at the book launch.
What began as social media posts detailing his prison journey soon turned into something more meaningful.
His weekly Facebook updates resonated with many in Thembisa, prompting his followers to encourage him to write his story.
With the guidance of Siyabonga Mthembu, his key mentor, Bembe transitioned from social media storyteller to published author.

“The book’s purpose is to share my life story and teach today’s youth to look for better role models and opportunities and to avoid crime. There are so many positive opportunities in Thembisa, and all it takes is focus and support,” Bembe said.
He added, “I had potential. I did well in school, and my family could afford to send me to study chartered accounting. But I got caught up in fast money and made choices that led me to prison.”
Bouncing Back details life behind bars, the pain men endure, and the lasting emotional toll imprisonment takes.

Bembe hopes his story will deter others from making similar mistakes and foster greater acceptance for former offenders trying to reintegrate into society.
Also speaking at the event was Themba Nzimande, known to many as ‘Skeem GP’, who shared a similar journey from prison to purpose.
“My time in prison made me realise I had to change. I used that time wisely. Today, I run one of Africa’s most-watched podcasts and have published my book, which Gayton McKenzie sponsored,” he said.
Nzimande emphasised the importance of self-motivation.
“We must teach the youth that confidence and arrogance are not similar. When you start something, finish it. Don’t wait for someone else to save you, make your own path.”
The successful book launch saw dozens of copies sold and community members moved by the motivational stories shared by Bembe and the guest speakers.
The event highlighted the power of storytelling in healing communities and empowering the next generation to rise above their circumstances.
