Thembisa NPO turns dumping sites into green spaces to fight illegal waste
Clean Environment, a local NPO, is transforming illegal dumping hotspots in Thembisa into parks, gardens and car washes to promote a cleaner, healthier community. Over 100 sites have already been rehabilitated.
Clean Environment, an environmental NPO led by Tshepang Motaung and based in Thembisa, actively tackles illegal dumping by transforming problem sites into small parks, car washes and mini gardens to discourage further waste disposal.
“We’ve been operating since 2017, when illegal dumping was a serious problem,” said a member who asked not to be named.

“Since then, we’ve closed more than 100 illegal dumping sites. As a team, we remain committed to weekly campaigns, cleaning these areas and educating our communities about the dangers of illegal dumping.”

The group recently began clearing overgrown grass along Andrew Mapheto Road in the Lekaneng section. However, they’ve noticed that contractors have also been appointed to do similar work in the area.

To avoid interfering with contracted work, Clean Environment will pause its activities along the road.
Their next focus will be the Phomolong area when they continue the ongoing #KeepTembisaClean campaign.
“Our work goes beyond just waste removal. We address all environmental challenges facing Thembisa, striving to create a cleaner, healthier community for everyone.”
