Wynard Marais seniors club celebrates 30 year anniversary

Members reflected on decades of friendship, support, and shared memories that continue to bring seniors together.

The Wynard Marais Senior Club recently celebrated a significant milestone: its 30th anniversary.

Members gathered at House of Ribs in Festival Mall on June 24 to commemorate three decades of friendship and shared memories.

Sue McKenna, who has been the club’s treasurer for over 12 years, reflected on her time with the group.

“I joined in 2008 and took a short six-month break at one stage, but I’ve always come back,” she said.

“Now, as I’m getting older, I would like to retire as treasurer at the end of the year, but I will always remain a member.”

She emphasised that honesty is essential in handling the club’s finances, and the club has always managed to stay afloat without financial struggles.

“We run our projects with the money we receive. I do a budget at the start of each year, and we stick to it,” McKenna explained.

“Members pay R180 a year and receive a R150 voucher at Christmas. We also include outings and a Christmas lunch, trying to give back in different ways.”

While rising costs may force a small increase in membership fees, McKenna noted the club always strives to keep it affordable, as many members live on fixed incomes..

The anniversary celebration featured tea and breakfast, creating a warm, social atmosphere where members could catch up and share stories.

Johan Bosman, the current chairperson, said it was an honour to lead the club.

“I started as chairperson this year after being elected last year. There’s a true spirit of camaraderie and care here,” he said.

“When members are unwell or absent, we check in on them, and we celebrate birthdays by singing to each member.”

Bosman, who joined the club in 2023, noted that membership has grown as more seniors find a sense of belonging within the group.

“We are working to attract more members and start new projects to keep the club vibrant,” he added.

“What keeps people coming back is that they’re treated as equals, not as people who are past their prime. There’s mutual respect, and we genuinely care for one another.”

For many members, the club is more than just a social gathering; it’s a place that eases loneliness and offers companionship.

Shirley Botes, who has been a member for about five years, said she keeps returning because of the club’s welcoming atmosphere.

“It’s fun, and everyone is friendly. I left when I was still working but came back because I missed it,” she said.

She added that the club has positively impacted her social life and that of others, providing a space for seniors to connect even on rainy days.

Mickey Harland, a member for 26 years, said the club is special because of the joy it brings.

“As we get older, we have fewer friends, but here we can laugh and enjoy each other’s company,” she said.

Cindy Hulme, who joined the club nine years ago, described it as one of the best decisions she has made.

“I love the company, the outings, and the games. It’s wonderful to see everyone each week and get out of the house to meet people my age,” she said.

Di Foster, a member for 13 years, agreed, adding that the club helped her build a social life after years of working without much opportunity to connect with others.
“I’ve made friends here, and it’s good to meet new people,” she said.
