The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) recently hosted a blood drive in Bonaero Park, drawing in 72 donors, including six first-time donors.

A single blood donation can save up to three lives.

Shawn Willemse, chairperson of the Boksburg committee, has played a key role in organising local blood drives and raising awareness about the importance of blood donation in the community.

Inspired by his father, Willemse began donating blood in 2022 and has since made it his mission to encourage others to donate.

“The purpose of our blood drives is to increase the blood supply, and it’s crucial to keep blood levels high,” Willemse said.

He added that as a community member, his goal is to arrange drives and educate people about the value of donating blood.

Residents like Alexa Chabie have also been inspired to donate. Chabie began donating blood at 16 and sees it as a meaningful way to give back.

“Donating blood has always been something I wanted to do, and I waited for the right time to start,” Chabie said.

“My dad also donates, and when I found out that one donation can save three lives, it made me even more determined.”

Chabie now donates alongside her sister and brother.

Andries Pretorius, a long-time donor, has been donating blood since 1982 and has reached 140 points. He believes blood donation not only saves lives but also benefits the donor’s health.

“When you donate blood, you help others, and it also makes you feel good,” Pretorius said.

His son, Ryno Pretorius, who started donating in 2006, echoed his sentiments.

“Donating blood is important because you can save lives,” he said. Despite a recent break due to health issues, Ryno plans to continue donating.

Tracyann van Biljon shared that she has been donating blood since the age of 27 while studying at university.

With 11 units donated so far, she believes she has helped save lives and acknowledges that she may one day need a blood donation herself.

“Donating blood is good for everyone’s health, as it stimulates the production of new blood cells,” Van Biljon said.
