Schools and businesses close amid protest over water

Residents of Ebony Park and Kaalfontein took to the streets this morning, September 9, to protest against the ongoing water crisis that has disrupted their daily lives.
According to residents, water in the area is being supplied on a strict schedule, leaving households struggling to meet their basic needs.
Protesters said the shortage has had a ripple effect, even disrupting schooling, as learners are reportedly only able to attend classes three to four times a week due to the supply cuts.

The community previously held a meeting about the crisis and resolved to stage a demonstration.
Protesters speaking to the Kempton Express and The Thembisan emphasised that the action remains peaceful, with no incidents of violence or looting reported. They said their goal is to draw the attention of authorities and demand urgent answers.

At the time of reporting, Republic Road and the entrances to Ebony Park, Kaalfontein, Allandale, and President Park were closed due to the protest.
Schools in the area have also been shut, while many businesses remain closed.

When our team arrived at the scene, no police or metro police were present, although protesters confirmed that members of the Ivory Park SAPS had passed by earlier.
Residents said they will continue protesting until they receive a way forward from the relevant stakeholders.
The Kempton Express and The Thembisan awaits comment from JMPD and City of Johannesburg.
