Santa Shoebox Project spreads festive cheer to children in need

From September 1, South Africans can pack or donate shoeboxes to support vulnerable children, helping them start the new school year with confidence and joy.

For many SA children, the start of a new school year comes without essentials such as proper shoes, basic stationery and even soap.

With more than half of the country’s 20.9 million children living in poverty, these daily challenges strip away their dignity and hinder their healthy development.

“In this context, small acts of generosity can make a tangible difference,” said Deb Zelezniak, the CEO of the Santa Shoebox Project.

“Over the past 19 years, South Africans have helped us reach more than 1.3 million underprivileged children in SA and Namibia with personalised shoeboxes filled with school supplies, toiletries and clothing. This year, our goal is to reach another 80 000 children.”

Communities across the country feel the impact.

Busie Thuli of the Sakhisizwe Community Development Centre and Creche says the project brought joy to the facility’s 100 children, many of whom are disabled or come from unemployed families.

“Since 2019, the annual shoebox distributions have been a lifeline, providing essentials and small treats during Christmas. Their support has been a beacon of hope, bringing dignity and happiness to our most vulnerable children.”

From September 1, residents can help make a child’s school year brighter by pledging, packing and dropping off a Santa Shoebox, or by donating a personalised Virtual Santa Shoebox.

“Together, we can uplift and empower children-in-need, ensuring they start the 2026 school year ready to learn and thrive,” said Zelezniak.
