Mashemong Primary School celebrates Heritage Day with vibrant cultural display
Mashemong unites different cultures for Heritage Day in Thembisa.
Learners and teachers of Mashemong Primary School in Thembisa celebrated Heritage Day with vibrant style on September 23, with a day filled with culture, tradition, and unity.
The school, which is home to learners from diverse cultural backgrounds, was transformed into a colourful scene of celebration as children arrived dressed in their traditional attire, eager to showcase their heritage.
“We are a school with various cultures, and today it is clear as everyone is colourful and enjoying the moment,” said principal Selolo Mmakwena.

“We felt it was important to unite our learners and allow them to wear their traditional clothing so they could showcase their skills and traditions. We also prepared traditional dances and food for them.”
With music filling the school grounds, the event created a festive atmosphere, giving both teachers and learners the chance to step out of the classroom and embrace the significance of Heritage Day.
“This is our way of instilling cultural pride in our learners,” Mmakwena said.

“As a two-language school with children and teachers from different backgrounds, it is important to remind learners of their heritage, their history, and their culture.

“Too often, today’s generation lacks knowledge of their roots, and days like this help bring that awareness back.”
The celebration was coordinated by Ramakoma Moloko, who worked tirelessly to ensure its success.
