The EMPD Northern Region Social Crime Prevention Unit, in partnership with ACT NOW, Miniacs, Correctional Services, and other stakeholders, recently participated in a Boy Child Empowerment Programme at Moriting Primary School in Thembisa.
While previous years have focused on initiatives such as Take a Girl Child to Work, this programme shifted the focus to empowering young boys to become responsible men in society.
True inclusion, organisers emphasised, means every child matters, regardless of gender.

Key issues addressed included substance abuse in schools and the growing number of absent fathers who fail to mentor their sons.
These social challenges are often contributors to gender-based violence and youth involvement in crime.
“I reiterate that both parents and community members have a responsibility to work with law enforcement and other stakeholders.
Addressing the challenges our communities face requires a collective effort,” said Thabiso Makgato of EMPD.
The programme also highlighted the importance of discipline, self-respect, and education, reinforcing that young boys are the future leaders and that learning opens doors to greater opportunities.
“One of our mandates is not just to enforce the law but to engage with communities through programmes and campaigns addressing critical issues facing young men,” added Makgato.
“There is a spirit in every boy; it has to be discovered and brought to light.”
A special thanks was extended to Inspector Tsotetsi and the team for their contribution to the initiative.
