Shukumani Primary keeps tradition alive with festivities
Learners and teachers at Shukumani Primary celebrated Heritage Day through traditional dances, drama, and cultural displays promoting unity and pride in South African heritage.
Learners, staff, and stakeholders of Shukumani Primary School in Thembisa celebrated Heritage Day on September 23.
The school committee hosted a programme filled with cultural activities aimed at teaching children about the importance of preserving their roots and valuing their heritage.
“It’s a day we celebrate to revive and instil our cultural values in the entire nation by promoting unity and healthy relationships among citizens,” said the organisers.
Learners showcased a variety of performances, including Tshivenda, Xitsonga, and Zulu dances, as well as a drama depicting the traditional Zulu lobola process, which helped learners understand its meaning and historical significance.

Acting deputy principal Hluphi Julia Shili said the highlight of the day was the Grade R learners demonstrating their understanding of the lobola process.
“This left a lasting impression, showing that one day they will grow into responsible adults who will work hard to build families and contribute to society,” she explained.

She added that the school’s aim was to instil values, beliefs, and customs in learners, such as respect for initiation schools, traditional ceremonies, clothing, and food.
“I believe the new generation is no longer as connected to their culture compared to the older generation.
“They are too modernised and have adopted Western ways, even in clothing and language. Many are afraid to speak their mother tongue, choosing instead to mix it with English.”
Shili said schools and communities must reinforce cultural practices to ensure they are carried forward.
“We must encourage the new generation to research their historical background, re-emphasise the legacy left by our ancestors, and take pride in our diverse cultures.
“We must foster a sense of belonging by documenting our traditions for future generations.”
